Manhasset Union Free School District
Services: Feasibility Study
Location: Miller Place, NY
Manhasset Public Schools supports the Town of Manhasset and several
surrounding villages on Long Island, New York. The school district,
which is located just outside Queens, is renowned on the Island for
its exceptionally high performance standards, a 12:1 student to
teacher ratio and its advanced and diverse educational
program.
In the mid-1990's, the district set forth on a large-scale building
improvement program for its three schools. The $21 million bond
referendum program provided expansions and upgrades to each of the
buildings. But even at its inception, the school board, administration
and people in the community realized that a much larger expenditure
would be necessary to meet the current facility needs.
The Board envisioned a capital improvement plan in which a sizable
outlay of funding could be utilized to complete the work not covered
by the bond program. The district sought the assistance of Thomas &
Williamson to develop a master plan strategy to accomplish its
goals.
We applied our experience in educational facility planning to the
following efforts:
- Performing a project audit to document work that was completed and identify other efforts needed to improve facility operation.
- Working with district administration and citizens to establish benchmarks for the overall project.
- Examine health and safety issues to be addressed by construction and renovation, such as air quality, fire alarms, and two-way intercom systems
Our team compiled information into a database for the district's ease of recordkeeping as the project continues.
