Franklin Elementary School
Services: Construction Management
Client: North Allegheny School District
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Project Cost: $7.6 Million
Originally constructed in the mid-1930s as a four-room schoolhouse—with additions in 1952 and 1966—Franklin Elementary required major renovations to evolve the building into a space suitable for today's educational programming.
When Thomas & Williamson joined the project, the job was nearly two months behind schedule. By analyzing the project scope and resources, our team
- developed a recovery schedule that got the project back on track for an on-time opening.
- applied our value engineering expertise to find opportunities for cost-savings—without compromising quality.
The project architect skillfully blended the old with new, inside and out. The completely renovated facility now has all of the features of a new facility: a well equipped art room, music suite, computer lab and media center, as well as a new full-size gymnasium.
The building's infrastructure was also updated, including new systems for air conditioning, fire alarms, power distribution, and data/communications systems.
Franklin came a long way from its days prior to the renovation, when students practiced instrumental music in the stairwells and the art teacher taught class from a portable cart.
